TACUSPA President's Message

Happy New Year, TACUSPA colleagues and friends!

Imagine my surprise when I received a message from a colleague in California that I’ve never met, expressing his support and encouragement as I stepped into the TACUSPA Presidency. Although our campuses are separated by nearly 1,800 miles, TACUSPA served as a thread connecting his presidency, which began in 1991, to mine beginning in 2020, nearly 30 years later. It’s moments like these that remind me that TACUSPA has always been, and will always be, an association enriched by its commitment to enhancing higher education and student success through the cultivation of relationships and engagement that promote leadership development.

Propelled by the momentum of the last year, which included the passage of the new strategic plan, as well as the powerful thrust of the history-making virtual fall conference that focused on reimaging representation, the 2020-2021 TACUSPA Board is looking forward to implementing short and long term initiatives that continue to support your efforts and success. Like streams merging to fuel a powerful river, we will remain agile and responsive to your needs as well as intentional about enhancing our infrastructure to ensure TACUSPA thrives.

Lastly, now that the fall semester has come to a close, I am reminded of the importance of veracity, in this instance a devotion to the truth. This time of year allows us the opportunity to honor the space between no longer and not yet, as we reflect on the triumphs and tragedies of the past and present while envisioning what could be in the future. Yet the value of this process is in the truthfulness of the assessment which may remind you that although your job duties are fulfilled, you are mentally or physically exhausted or that your institution may not have made all the right decisions, but that people have good intentions and change can occur more rapidly than originally assumed. Regardless, wellness has many dimensions and at the core is truthfulness, which allows us to be our best selves. Take care of yourself!

With thanks!
