TACUSPA President's Message

Hola, amigos y colegas de TACUSPA.

Hello, TACUSPA friends and colleagues,

I want to first thank everyone who was able to join us at our Annual TACUSPA Conference in San Marcos. Molly, Tabitha, Nicki, and their team did a fantastic job! Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to TACUSPA and our membership!

As we begin our spring semester, we excitedly welcome our students back to campus and we prepare to engage them in a variety of programs and events throughout the semester with the hopes of celebrating graduations, awards, and new beginnings with them.

We all know far too well that the time and space between a beginning and end holds so many other things. Challenging conversations about difference, supporting students as they maneuver preparing to enter the work force, and supporting then in times of need and crisis. All of which are challenging in their own right, but necessary work for growth and development.

This week, our colleagues at Texas A&M University-Commerce are maneuvering a reality that many of us hope to never have to face. Our thoughts and love are most certainly with Texas A&M University-Commerce and the surrounding communities, but in particular, with our colleagues who will have to support their peers and students through this. Please know that we are hear for you and ready to help should you need it.

To all of my colleagues across the State of Texas, I hope that you have a spring semester full of growth and development, but above all I hope that you are supported, seen, and that you know you matter. Thank you for the work that you do.

Sinceramente/Sincerely,

Iliana Meléndez

Big 12 LGBTQIA and Allies Summit

Plans are coming together for the 3rd Big 12 LGBTQIA and Allies Summit, March 6-8, 2020, at Texas Tech University. The Summit is open to all student leaders, faculty, staff, and community members, regardless of institutional affiliation.

Regular registration is available online from now through February 11. Through the generosity of our many sponsors and contributors, we are able to prioritize making the Summit as accessible as possible with a $35 regular registration fee. Beginning February 12, an additional $10 per registration late fee will be assessed. The theme of this year’s Summit is “This is My Life, I’ll Decide My Future.”

Participants will have numerous opportunities to engage each other and make connections that have the potential to significantly impact diversity and inclusion work on our campuses and in the communities we call home. Offering upwards of thirty educational sessions, ranging from 20-60-90-minutes in length, as well as three plenary opportunities, this weekend in early March is not to be missed.

During the Summit, we also will have plenty of social activities for participants, including a Poetry Slam hosted by three-time national award-winning slam poet Regie Cabico. And, if that is not enough, this year’s whimsical theme gives opportunities for some Alice in Wonderland characters we all know and love to make an appearance. Questions about the Summit should be directed to the Office of LGBTQIA Education & Engagement at Texas Tech University by emailing campuslife.lgbtqia@ttu.edu
